MEET OUR TEAM

The ERC Consolidator Grant has enabled the consolidation and expansion of a distinct research group at Ghent University. In just two years, the team has grown into a visible interdisciplinary unit that combines criminology, statistics, data science, law, and ethics. New researchers have joined, existing members have been trained in advanced methods such as explainable AI and machine learning, and a strong group identity has been established.

This identity extends well beyond academia. Through Ghent University’s valorisation structures, BIGDATPOL has developed a strong external profile, translating research into proof-of-concept software and practical guidelines for police partners. International collaborations have flourished, and the group is increasingly recognised as a reference point in debates on AI, policing, and security. The project’s educational impact is equally significant, with BIGDATPOL insights now embedded in university curricula and professional training.
